A B O U T
I am a photographer who is concerned with where I am. The 'where' in life interests me profoundly. Place is my thing. Place, landscape, environment, whatever you call it, is a reflection of our common humanity. We shape it and in turn, it shapes us; our thoughts, our outlook, our motivation. In my world, landscape photography encompasses all photography; even portraiture. It's all about place... and setting. The act of landscape photography is to attempt to gain understanding of where you are.
I am a photographer with a defined visual approach. That approach is embodied in a personal process that begins by gathering within the frame the color, the materiality, the atmosphere, the mood.... "Mise en Scene" as it's called in theatre and film. It is spontaneous in spirit and documentary influenced. It's in search of the formal and noble character of the subject; an uncluttered scene that communicates a sense of clarity around the nature of person and place. It's truth made visible.
I am a Master of Architecture by education from the University of Maryland School of Architecture, where I learned to observe and then understand the built and natural worlds and how they interact. Critical thinking and analysis were the leavening that made that recipe work. That visual education and mode of thought handed off naturally to my 25 year life as a photographer.

“....I sense Light as the giver of all presences, and material as spent Light. What is made by Light casts a shadow, and the shadow belongs to Light....” Louis I. Kahn
